Chapter 1: Action in an Emergency

CHAPTER 1

The main sequence here is for adult casualties. If the casualty is an infant or a child, assess response and breathing then treat as necessary.

1. ASSESS SITUATION
 - are there any risks to YOU or the CASUALTY?
 - if YES: put YOUR SAFETY 1st, remove the danger from the casualty or, if this is not possible, REMOVE the casualty from DANGER. If it is UNSAFE, call 999 for emergency help and wait for it to arrive.

2. CHECK CASUALTY
 - is the casualty visibly CONSCIOUS?
 - if YES: check for other conditions (opposite) and treat as necessary. Summon help if needed.
 - if NO: go next step -->

3. CHECK RESPONSE
 - does the casualty RESPOND to your voice or to gentle stimulation?
 - if YEScheck for other conditions (opposite) and treat as necessary. Summon help if needed.
 - if NO: go next step -->

4. OPEN AIRWAY-CHECK BREATHING
 - open the casualty's airway and CHECK FOR BREATHING. is the casualty breathing normally?
 - if YES: place the casualty in the recovery position.
 - if NO: go next step -->

 4.1. ARE YOU ALONE?
  - if YES: is the unconsciousness due to drowning? if YES: give 5 rescue breaths then carry out resuscitation for 1 minute before calling 999 for ambulance service. if NO: call 999 for ambulance service, then continue the resuscitation sequence. Go next step -->
  - if NO: ask a helper to call 999 for ambulance service to pass on detailsof the casualty's condition. Go next step -->


5. COMMENCE CHEST COMPRESSION
 - give 30 chest compressions.

6. COMMENCE RESCUE BREATH
 - give 2 rescue breaths. 

7. CONTINUE CPR
 - continue chest compressions followed by rescue breaths until: emergency help takes over; the casualty starts to breathe normally; or you are too exhausted to continue.
 - if at any stage the casualty begins breathing normally, place him in the recovery position.


SPECIAL CASE
TREATING CHILDREN AND INFANTS

 - Assess the child.
 - If not breathing send a helper to call 999 for ambulance service.
 - If you are on your own:

  i) give 5 initial rescue breaths;
  ii) give 30 chest compressions, followed by 2 rescue breaths (CPR);
  iii) continue for 1 minute, then call 999 for ambulance service;
  iv) continue CPR until: emergency help takes over; the child starts to breathe normally; or you are too exhausted to continue.
